The Red Sox 2010 draft class is starting to pay dividends, as many had great games at the close of April 2013.

Bryce BrentzThe player to climb the highest through the farm system ladder was Boston’s second pick that year, Bryce Brentz. 2013 did not start off on the right foot for Brentz, literally, as he shot himself in the leg while cleaning his gun in February. Brentz is all healed now, as he homered in his third consecutive game last night for Pawtucket. Maybe this pick from Middle Tennessee State, with his $889,200 signing bonus, might be closer to playing right field in Boston than many think.

Boston had the 57th pick in 2010, and used it to select right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman out of the University of Texas. Now pitching in AA, Workman worked six and two thirds innings yesterday, giving up two hits, one run, one walk, and struck out six, earning his fourth victory of the year to go along with zero losses. On the season his WHIP of 0.71 leads the Eastern League. This 6’4″ 24-year-old former Longhorn should be moving up to AAA before long.

Anthony Ranaudo was the 39th pick in the 2010 draft. He was given a $2,550,000 salary bonus to sign out of LSU, and this right-hander from New Jersey is looking like he might earn that large check. Ranaudo pitched last on April 27, hurling six innings, giving up two hits, no walks and no runs, with nine strikeouts. After the first month of 2013, this 6”7″ flame thrower has 26 strikeouts and five walks, with an ERA of 0.83 to go with a WHIP of 0.74, which sits right behind Workman on the Eastern League leaderboard.

These two former college pitchers should both be moving up to AAA, and if they keep pitching this way they could be shipped up to Boston by September this year.

Garin CecchiniThe biggest surprise of the class of 2010 has to be 22-year-old Garin Cecchini, who was selected with the 142 pick in the fourth round. He was given a bonus of $1,310,000 to sign with Boston out of Alfred Barbe High School in Lake Charles, LA.

In last night’s game for the Salem Red Sox, the brother of the Mets 2012 first round pick Gavin Cecchini, had three hits, two doubles and a home run, and two stolen bases. For the season the older Cecchini brother leads all Red Sox farmhands with a .392 average, .478 OBP, 31 hits, and 1.187 OPS.

This slick fielding third baseman should soon be in Portland and could be Red Sox minor league player of the month for April.

One of his closest competitors for that prize is the person that was drafted in the round before him in 2010. Sean Coyle was taken with the 110th pick in the third round and given $1,300,000 to sign out of high school in Chalfont, PA.  Coyle now plays second base for the Salem Red Sox. This 5’8″ Dustin Pedroia clone leads all Red Sox minor leaguers with a slugging percentage of .770 in April.

Of these five players Boston selected in the 2010 draft which one do you think will make it to Boston first?

A. Anthony Ranaudo
B. Brandon Workman
C. Bryce Brentz
D. Garin Cecchini
E. Sean Coyle
